London Markets: FTSE 100 gains as resources, banks rise

By Sara Sjolin

LONDON (MarketWatch) ? British stocks rose on Tuesday as gains for the mining and banking sectors lifted the market after trade data from China suggested continued solid Chinese demand.

The FTSE 100 /quotes/zigman/3173262 UK:UKX +1.50% , Britain?s benchmark stock index, climbed 1.5% to 5,697, reversing a 0.7% loss on Monday.

Euro crisis close to boiling point again

The prospect of the European debt crisis boiling over is rearing its head again as Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Nicolas Sarkozy are holding meetings - and once again they are pointing fingers at Greece.

Mining shares posted strong gains, with Kazakhmys PLC /quotes/zigman/391399 UK:KAZ +5.03% ?jumping 5.1%, Antofagasta PLC /quotes/zigman/139152 UK:ANTO +5.02% ?rising 5.1%, and Vedanta Resources PLC /quotes/zigman/336962 UK:VED +6.05% ?climbing 6.2%.

Mining stocks tend to rise on positive data from China, because the nation is a big consumer of commodities. Detailed imports data showed Tuesday that Chinese demand growth for many commodities has picked up, according to Barclays Capital. Copper imports rose 47.7% year-on-year in December compared to 28.6% in November, while aluminum imports increased 25.1% versus 3.1% in November.

?There is a growing acceptance that China might be able to do a soft landing rather than a hard landing, as previously feared,? said Richard Hunter, head of U.K. equities at Hargreaves Lansdown PLC.

Gold futures also gained Tuesday, which further lent support to the mining sector.

Financials and banks also pushed the British stock market north with Lloyds Banking Group PLC /quotes/zigman/255656/quotes/nls/lyg LYG -3.07% ? /quotes/zigman/126322 UK:LLOY +3.78% ?rising 3.8%, Barclays PLC /quotes/zigman/152323/quotes/nls/bcs BCS -2.53% ? /quotes/zigman/301787 UK:BARC +5.73% ?climbing 6% and Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC /quotes/zigman/530544/quotes/nls/rbs RBS -0.64% ? /quotes/zigman/155978 UK:RBS +4.91% ?moving up 4.5%.

?The banks benefit from an improved global economy and more promising signals from U.S. economic data,? said Hunter.

However, bank stocks are more volatile than the broader market and tend to post strong gains in market rallies, but big losses when sentiment is negative, according to Hunter. Tuesday?s gains in the banking sector are therefore unlikely to continue and can quickly be converted into losses.

?Overall, the European situation has to be resolved, before we can make sustainable progress. I will not be surprised if we see these gains being reversed,? Hunter said.

In the energy sector, Cairn Energy PLC /quotes/zigman/576745 UK:CNE +3.09% ?posted a 3% gain, after the company said it will pay shareholders $3.5 billion in cash. Shareholders will receive ?1.60 ($2.47) for each existing ordinary share.

Retailer Marks & Spencer Group PLC /quotes/zigman/298234 UK:MKS +3.05% ?rose 3% on positive Christmas sales data. Group sales were up 2.4% excluding valued-added tax for the 13 weeks leading up to Dec. 31, with food and clothing performing the strongest. The retailer also reiterated its full-year profit view, but said it expects conditions to remain challenging.

Soul Electronics' intros Party in a Box wireless speaker system, Ludacris' new way to keep your festivities bumping

Can we get a "hey-oh" from all the party people in the CES-house? Soul Electronics (rapper Ludacris' line of audio products) has today unveiled its first non-headphone device, dubbed Party in a Box. The name may seem a bit silly, but this speaker system is packing some serious specs. The PIAB is large enough to dock an iPad, and features both AirPlay and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. On top of ensuring nearly any modern mobile device should be able to stream audio to it sans wires, the mini-rig also comes with 5.8GHz two-way transceiver that'll allow you to play your tunes over multiple PIABs, or even other speakers. Speaking of speakers, internally you'll find a duo of 6.5-inch woofers, to 3-inch mid-purposed drivers, and finally, a quartet of 1-inch tweeters.

For wired connectivity, the rig packs an HDMI output, an auxiliary connection for wired hookup, and a best of all, a balanced mic input (XLR?) so you can MC from just about anywhere there's power. Considering that Party in a Box features a carry handle, shoulder strap and will plug plug into wall and car sockets or run off of its own rechargeable batteries, we'd imagine it's a very feasible proposition. For a bit of extra spice, the system also has a a pair of VU meters that'll bump to your jams, and even customizable mood-lighting.

Aside from PIAB, Soul is also introducing a few new color-schemes for its SL49, SL99 in-ear headphones, as well as its SL300 over-ear model. There's no specific word on pricing or availability just yet, but if we hear anything from the show floor, you can be sure we'll keep you post. Full press release just past the break.

Familiar fight: Paul vs. Santorum (Politico)

GOFFSTOWN, N.H. ? Instead of engaging the front-runner in the ABC News/Yahoo! debate, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum went after each other.

The beneficiary was Mitt Romney, who escaped largely unscathed.

The Paul-Santorum sniping is a familiar storyline, and Saturday night provided the latest in a series of low intensity confrontations between two candidates representing distinctly different GOP camps and political cultures.

Santorum, more than two decades Paul?s junior, is a hawkish social conservative who quickly found his way into a GOP leadership role in the Senate. Paul is in many ways his polar opposite: a dovish libertarian and career House backbencher who thumbs his nose at both his party and the traditional paths to power in Washington.

For much of the campaign, the tensions between the two ? frequently expressed through their differences on U.S. policy toward Iran ? didn?t matter: neither seemed to be going anywhere in the race.

But with both candidates now ensconced as top tier candidates according to recent polls, their clashes have taken on a greater strategic significance. Paul?s attacks on Santorum work to Romney?s advantage, sullying the former Pennsylvania senator while leaving Romney?s hands clean. And every moment that Paul and Santorum spend focused on each other is a moment when the field isn?t attacking the front-runner.

Asked after Saturday?s debate if there is any personal animosity between himself and Paul, Santorum replied, ?Oh gosh, no? and then sought to divest himself of responsibility for the bickering.

?He called me corrupt. What are you gonna?I don?t think I?m the one that started the skirmish,? Santorum said.

In the post-debate spin room, Paul?s son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, attributed the conflict between his dad and Santorum to the ex-senator?s new-found place in the GOP field?s first tier.

?It?s just the fact that he?s new to the top tier, hasn?t been screened or vetted, and this is his chance,? Rand Paul said.

Even prior to the debate, Paul had gone on the air with a new ad in South Carolina that accuses Santorum of being a ?corporate lobbyist? and ?Washington politician? who was named ?one of the most corrupt members of Congress.?

At St. Anselm College, where the debate took place Saturday night, Paul defended the ad when asked about it by debate moderators.

?He?s a big-government, big-spending individual ? He became a high-powered lobbyist,? Paul contended.

?They caught you not telling the truth, Ron,? Santorum interjected.

Paul went on: ?What really counts is his record. I mean, he?s a big government, big spending individual. Because, you know, he preached to the fact he wanted a balanced budget amendment but voted to raise the debt [limit] five times. So he is a big government person.?

?And also where did he get ? make his living afterwards? I mean, he became a high-powered lobbyist on ? in Washington, D.C. And he has done quite well.?

On his stroll toward Mexico's presidency, Pena Nieto stumbles

Reporting from Mexico City?

?

First, he struggled to name a single book he'd read, except for "parts" of the Bible. Then he couldn't quote the minimum wage nor the price of the omnipresent tortilla.

The man who would be the next president of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, is not off to a good start.

For months, the election of Pena Nieto had taken on an air of near-inevitability. The handsome politician with the TV star wife consistently leads polls by seemingly insurmountable margins.

But with the campaign now taking shape in earnest, Pena Nieto has stumbled badly in a series of embarrassing, well-publicized gaffes that raise questions about his mettle as a candidate.

Mexicans will vote in July to replace President Felipe Calderon, whose six-year term has been plagued by violence and drug cartel warfare that have left as many as 50,000 people dead. Many voters are looking for a change. Calderon is barred by law from seeking reelection.

Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which ruled Mexico with an iron fist for seven decades until being unseated from the presidency in 2000, has positioned itself to return to power. Maintaining that it has reformed from its corrupt ways, the PRI has won several governorships and legislative offices to rebuild a formidable party machinery and push laws favoring its election bid.

Leading that bid is Pena Nieto, until September the governor of Mexico state, the nation's most populous. With other parties divided, smarting or in disarray, Pena Nieto has seemed unbeatable, his youthful appeal meant to target a new generation of voters with little memory of the PRI's dark past.

But amid his stumbles, Pena Nieto has shown no ability to improvise and muster a quick comeback to rescue himself.

His troubles started in early December at the renowned International Book Fair in Guadalajara, where he was presenting his own book, "Mexico: The Great Hope."

Asked to name three books that had influenced him, the candidate hesitated, stammered and looked to aides for help. Struggling, he eventually said he had read "parts of" the Bible. Then he named a Mexican work of fiction from the last decade, "La Silla del Aguila" (The Eagle's Throne), but got the author wrong. He attributed it to a leading historian, Enrique Krauze, but it was written by Mexico's most famous living novelist, Carlos Fuentes.

"What happens is when I read books, the titles don't always stick," Pena Nieto said by way of explanation.

The flub went viral, and Pena Nieto quickly became the butt of many a joke among rivals, on social networks and in the media. It seemed to confirm a widely held notion of the candidate as pretty but shallow. Some called it his "Oops moment," alluding to U.S. Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry's inability to remember which three government agencies he would close.

It was Fuentes himself who perhaps delivered the most bruising criticism.

"This gentleman has the right not to read me," Fuentes told the BBC Spanish-language service. "What he does not have the right to is to be president of Mexico, based on ignorance."

Pena Nieto later tried to make amends, explaining in Twitter messages that he felt embarrassed but was so busy with politics he didn't have a lot of time to read.

His case was not helped by his teenage daughter Paulina, who re-tweeted a message that criticized "a bunch of jerks who are part of the prole [proletariat] and only criticize those they envy." Prole is a derogatory term referring to poor people. The snobbish tinge of the missive did not go over well in a country with such an enormous class divide. (She too later apologized.)

The candidate's next faux pas came during an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, when he could not say how much the minimum wage was. Nor could he quote the price of a kilo of tortillas, a staple in all Mexican working- and middle-class households.

Pena Nieto compounded his misstep, stating that he couldn't be expected to know the price of tortillas because "I am not the lady of the house," a comment seen as sexist and doubly insensitive.

Although these fumbles are unlikely to substantially erode his support, they do suggest that Pena Nieto is not the picture-perfect candidate that many here have thought him to be. It suggests that the PRI, on an uphill crusade to improve its image, also has work cut out for it in sustaining his candidacy.

Navy SEAL dies after accidentally shooting himself

Navy officials have confirmed that a Navy SEAL who accidentally shot himself in the head has died.

Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Frank Magallon tells the U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/ycqw4O ) that Petty Officer 3rd Class Gene "Geno" Clayont, Jr. was taken off life support on Saturday. He is survived by his parents and three sisters.

San Diego police were called on Thursday after the accident. Police say Clayton had gone to a bar and brought a woman back to his apartment and was showing her guns when he put a pistol to his head, believing it was unloaded, and pulled the trigger.

Paramedics took Clayton to a San Diego hospital where he was placed on life support.
