PHOENIX (AP) -Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners singled to lead off the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks for the 2,500th hit of his Major League Baseball career late Tuesday.

Ichiro finished 4 for 5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Mariners in their 12-9 win in 10 innings.

The 38-year-old Ichiro had 1,278 hits in nine seasons with the Orix Blue Wave of the Japanese Pacific League before joining the Mariners in 2001.

His 3,778 hits are the third-most among professional players in either country, seven more than Henry Aaron and trailing only Pete Rose (4,256) and Ty Cobb (4,191).
