Republican Presidential Candidates Embrace Granting Legal Rights ...

December 22, 2011, 1:31 pm By ERIK ECKHOLM

The ?personhood amendment,? granting legal rights to human embryos, might have seemed to be a political nonstarter after voters in Mississippi, arguably the most conservative and anti-abortion state in the nation, rejected such a proposal last month. But the idea has not faded in the Republican primaries.

Mississippi voters said they thought twice about the proposal when they heard that it would not only ban virtually all abortions but also some forms of contraception like I.U.D.?s and morning-after pills, could hamper in-vitro fertilization clinics and could, doctors warned, discourage critical medical care for pregnant women. It has also caused a bitter split in the anti-abortion movement, with traditional leaders, including National Right to Life and the Roman Catholic bishops, opposed to the idea on strategic grounds, arguing that it would end in a legal debacle that only strengthens abortion rights.

These considerations have apparently not put off some of the Republican presidential aspirants, who are polishing and trumpeting their credentials as Christian conservatives in their efforts to be seen as the leading Not Romney. This month, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum have all signed a pledge to support ?personhood? at conception that was crafted by Personhood USA, a Colorado group that has continued to push the idea in several states.

Mrs. Bachmann, Mr. Gingrich and Mr. Santorum have also agreed to celebrate the personhood concept in a ?Presidential Pro-Life Forum? in Iowa next Tuesday, Dec. 27, that will be moderated by the conservative radio host Steve Deace and broadcast live on his syndicated program. The 90-minute ?tele-town hall? is being hosted by Personhood USA and co-sponsored by several of the country?s most conservative evangelical Christian groups including The Call, Liberty Counsel and the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Coalition. ?An invitation has been extended to the remaining G.O.P. presidential candidates,? Personhood USA said in a news release.

Column: Finally, some good news for college game (AP)

We interrupt this seamy, scandal-plagued, cash-grab-of-a-college-football season for the following public-service message:

Matt Barkley is staying in school.

The announcement Thursday that Barkley will return to USC for his senior season isn't really a tale about great sacrifice. He knows NFL-ready quarterback prospects almost always hold their value and he'll likely get his millions soon enough.

It isn't even the most uplifting story in the game this week. That would be Eric LeGrand's appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated commemorating the best sports moment of 2011, when he led his Rutgers teammates onto the field in a wheelchair for a home game in late October, little more than a year after LeGrand was paralyzed playing against Army.

Barkley's decision isn't the newsiest development this week, either, That would be the wrist slap the NCAA gave Ohio State, whose clueless president and shameless athletic director whined that the school had punished itself enough after learning that former coach Jim Tressel lied and cheated his way through the entire 2010 season.

But Barkley's story might be the most surprising, considering how rarely loyalty takes hold across the college football landscape, including the very spot on which he was standing.

Not quite two years ago, Pete Carroll, the coach who recruited Barkley, left for Seattle and the NFL rather than stick around and face the harsh penalties the NCAA was about to levy on Southern California for a host of violations on his watch. The coach Barkley played for the past two seasons, Lane Kiffin, didn't exactly cover himself in glory, either, for the way he departed Tennessee ? abruptly ? to take Carroll's place.

Barkley and his teammates bore the brunt of the postseason bans and all that upheaval and decided to come back anyway.

"I am staying so I can finish what I started," Barkley said to cheers inside USC's Heritage Hall.

More than a few pro scouts shook their heads at that moment, though, recalling how Matt Leinart made the same call to a similar round of cheers a handful of years earlier.

"It's another year with my pals, no matter how it turns out," Leinart said a few days after his decision. "But I'll tell you what: I didn't want to look back 10 or 20 years down the road and find out I passed on the chance to be a part of something really special."

He was coming off USC's back-to-back national championships and a Heisman Trophy-winning season. He didn't duplicate either achievement in the one that followed and his draft stock tumbled when Texas quarterback Vince Young, who outplayed Leinart in a thrilling Bowl Championship Series finale, declared himself eligible for the same 2006 draft. Leinart, a lock for the top spot a year earlier, tumbled to No. 10 and wound up costing himself millions.

If there's any consolation for Barkley in that example, it's that Leinart, despite proving himself a barely adequate backup in the pros, still made millions. Plus, like Leinart, Barkley will be returning to a Trojans squad with a very realistic chance to win a national championship next season and a strong enough supporting cast ? on offense, anyway ? to get him a Heisman Trophy.

USC finished 10-2 and climbed all the way to No. 5 before shutting things down for the season. While Barkley loses his best protector on the offensive line ? left tackle Matt Kalil already declared for the NFL draft, where could go as high as No. 2 ? the quarterback will reunite with receivers Marqise Lee and Robert Woods, a tandem that just might be the nation's best.

We won't know how things turn out, of course, for a while. But it's hardly the bad business decision those NFL scouts panned it as, if only because Stanford's Andrew Luck made the same one at the end of last season and cemented his place at the top of next spring's NFL draft.

And the quartet of quarterbacks who did the same dating back to Peyton Manning in 1997 ? Leinart, Tim Tebow (2009) and Jake Locker (2010) ? all were gone by the end of the first round the following year.

But minimizing the risk that Barkley is taking shouldn't stop us from marveling at the loyalty he showed to a school and a sport that always rewards coaches and administrators handsomely, but not always the kids who make it all possible.

The lessons the sport has been teaching the past few years ? from fleeing coaches to shady conference realignment schemes to university presidents only too willing to look the other way ? is that it's every man for himself. By returning to USC for one more year, Barkley signaled he was still about something else.

Bravo.

"That's not an easy decision," said Kiffin, who won't get a better present this Christmas. "Not many people would do what Matt has done."

When Apple?s Siri Kills People [VIDEO]

Each day, Mashable highlights one noteworthy YouTube video. Check out all our viral video picks.

If Apple?s hands-free assistant Siri one day turned against the human race and transformed into a freakishly evil killing machine, well, that would really, really suck. However improbable, that hypothetical situation is exactly the fodder Rooster Teeth Productions used to create the ?Siri: The Holiday Horror Movie (Trailer)? clip above.

The clever spoof shows Siri taunting, attacking and killing a group of friends who all received the iPhone 4S for Christmas. At one point ? in its familiar female voice ? Siri quips, ?Life has no meaning. It?s true, you?re alive and then you die, you die, you die, die, die, die ? ? After that, all hell breaks loose.

Review: As director, Jolie shows heavy hand (AP)

The heavy-handed touch of Angelina Jolie's directorial debut "In the Land of Blood and Honey" is evident right from the start, when a bomb explodes in a nightclub before our main characters, out on a date, have even shared a word.

Throughout the film, Jolie puts politics ahead of story and character, blatantly imposing a message ? an altruist message, but a message nonetheless ? on the film. And the result is a movie whose narrative feels like a fictionalized United Nations presentation.

Certainly, Jolie's bluntness is justifiable. The film, in Bosnian with subtitles, is about the Bosnian War of the early 1990s and the atrocities of genocide that came with it, conducted by the Bosnian Serb Army in an ethnic cleansing of Bosnian Muslims.

"In the Land of Blood and Honey" exists as a caution to international inaction, to highlight the horror that transpired in the years before NATO airstrikes and international pressure brought an end to the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Much of it is horrifying to watch. What Jolie depicts on camera (random murder, abysmal rape) is scarcely any less ugly than what transpires just off-screen (mass murder, a slaughtered baby).

In the midst of this is the story of a hesitant, uncertain love between a Bosnian Muslim artist, Ajla (Zana Marjanovic), and a Serbian police officer turned military captain, Danijel (Goran Kostic). They are on opposite sides of the conflict, but the coincidences of Ajla's imprisonment keep her in Danijel's orbit.

Danijel objects to the war, and his protection of Ajla compromises his stature among his men. But the ravages of war also push him toward less nuanced sympathies.

Jolie, who also wrote the screenplay, doesn't really expand the movie beyond the lovers and it suffers as a result. There is Ajla's sister (Vanesa Glodjo), who lives underground, and Danijel's cruel father, Gen. Nebojsa Vukojevich (Rade Serbedzija, in the film's best performance), who expresses the historical prejudices underlying the war.

It's easy to criticize Jolie for her showy humanitarianism or to be skeptical of such a glamorous actress trying to direct. Already, she has been something of a lightning rod, accused of plagiarizing the film's story, exploiting the rape victims of the war, vilifying the Serbs and taking advantage of her position as a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency.

But Jolie deserves plenty of credit here. There are far worse things than using one's celebrity to bring attention to the dangers of pacifism in the face of war crimes and ethnic cleansing.

With the exception of a handful of visual missteps (a shot of shadows dancing on the wall, long fades to black), the film is nicely shot (Dean Semler is director of photography) and atmospheric. It particularly benefits from its largely Budapest locales. (Only second unit material was shot in Sarajevo after protests erupted over the movie's portrayal of Serbs.) The cast, mostly Bosnian actors, is largely solid, even when the film's direction is lacking.

But the storytelling is more problematic. There isn't enough context given to the overall conflict, and the love story feels increasingly myopic as the war drags on and the film's ambitions broaden.

Instead of finding a way to dramatize international inaction or pursing answers that might help explain genocide, "In the Land of Blood and Honey" makes its case only in the illustration of extreme, intolerable violence. Yes, there is power in simply showing these acts, but they eventually have a ring of calculation.

They pass without contemplation, with merely a deadening point-making that cuts off dialogue, rather than facilitates it.

"In the Land of Blood and Honey," a FilmDistrict release, is rated R for war violence and atrocities including rape, sexuality nudity and language. In Bosnian with subtitles. Running time: 127 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Verdict for Malaysia's Anwar expected in January (AP)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia ? Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim says a conviction in his sodomy trial would only strengthen his opposition alliance ahead of elections.

Anwar also vowed to keep fighting for justice even if he was put behind bars. He faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty of sodomizing his male former aide.

The court announced Thursday it would deliver its verdict on Jan. 9.

Anwar says he is surprised at the early verdict date and questioned if it was being rushed to keep him from contesting national elections widely expected next year.

A conviction in the two-year trial would prevent Anwar from running in the polls.

Prime Minister Najib Razak has denied Anwar's allegation that the government cooked up the charge to crush his political career.

Novelist Michael Peterson gets new trial (AP)

DURHAM, N.C. ? Novelist Michael Peterson will get a new trial in the death of his wife because a key investigator misled jurors about the strength of bloodstain evidence, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Peterson was convicted of first-degree murder in the 2001 death of Kathleen Peterson, who was found at the bottom of a bloody staircase in the couple's mansion. Peterson has maintained his wife died in an accidental fall.

Four of Peterson's children were in the front row of the courtroom when the judge announced his decision. He blew them a kiss as several members if the family sobbed with joy.

Judge Orlando Hudson ruled that former State Bureau of Investigation agent Duane Deaver misled jurors at Peterson's 2003 trial.

Deaver was fired by the agency in January after an independent audit found problems in 34 cases where he either misreported test results, withheld results that could have helped the defendant or overstated the strength of the evidence to help prosecutors.

Over the last week, defense lawyer David Rudolf presented witnesses to cast doubt on Deaver's credibility, including three of the agent's former colleagues.

Nationally recognized experts in bloodstain pattern analysis testified that Deaver used antiquated techniques and that he gave opinions before the jury that were not justified by a scientific examination of the evidence.

The defense also showed that Deaver greatly exaggerated his level of experience and expertise when he was certified to provide expert testimony.

In his closing argument Wednesday, Rudolf said Deaver's lies violated Peterson's right to a fair trial.

"There is no way to sugarcoat it," Rudolf said. "Deaver lied to this court and this jury multiple times."

The judge, who presided over the 2003 trial, has scheduled a 2:30 p.m. hearing to determine whether Peterson can be released pending his retrial.

Peterson's novels include the 1990 "A Time of War," an in-the-trenches look at the Vietnam War, and a 1995 sequel, "A Bitter Peace."

Celtic escapes penalty for pro-IRA chanting

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:36 p.m. ET Dec. 5, 2011

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -Celtic will face no punishment from the Scottish Premier League following an investigation into the singing of offensive Irish political songs by a section of the club's fans in October.

The SPL says the Glasgow club has been cleared of breaching league rules because it took "all reasonable steps to minimize the ... unacceptable conduct" by supporters who chanted pro-IRA songs during the 0-0 home draw with Hibernian on Oct. 29.

The league welcomed Celtic's condemnation of the chanting and its ongoing work to ensure similar incidents don't happen again.

Fans of Celtic are predominantly Catholic while those of fierce city rival Rangers are mostly Protestant. Both clubs have traditionally sung about Irish religious history.

UN chief to open ministers level at climate talks (AP)

DURBAN, South Africa ? The U.N. Environment Program chief says a treaty on climate change wouldn't be enough to avert a dangerous rise in global temperatures, and countries need to voluntarily make deeper cuts in carbon emissions.

Achim Steiner spoke Tuesday hours before U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is due to open the decisive ministerial stage of a two-week 194-nation conference on climate change.

The conference is focusing on efforts to move toward a future agreement to legally bind all nations to emissions targets, including China and the United States.

Steiner presented UNEP's report showing the gap is widening between pledges by nations to reduce greenhouse gases and the targets set by scientists for preventing runaway global warming.

"We are losing time," he said.

Police arrest Occupy Portland demonstrators

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Authorities say riot police moved into a downtown Portland park area and arrested several anti-Wall Street protesters Saturday night after they refused to vacate the park.

Police Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers began detaining protesters at South Park blocks around 8:30 p.m., after the park was closed a half hour early,

He says several arrests were made but still doesn't have an exact count.

Occupy Portland demonstrators set up tents in a portion of the park that runs through Southwest Portland earlier in the day and vowed to stay through the winter, defying city officials who said overnight camping will not be allowed.

The protesters had been without an encampment since police swept through a downtown site three weeks ago, making arrests and dismantling tents.

Are Your Smartphone Keystrokes Being Copied and Transmitted? (NewsFactor)

Are the text messages you type into your Android, Nokia, or BlackBerry smartphone being sent back to your carrier? A security researcher is saying yes.

Developer Trevor Eckhart has recently posted a video showing that software from a company called Carrier IQ sends text messages, encrypted searches, and other user actions to the carrier. Eckhart found out that the information is sent even before a call is made. In the video demonstration, Eckhart noted that "every button you press in the dialer before you call, it already gets sent off to the IQ application." The information is also sent if the user is using Wi-Fi, not the carrier's cell phone network.

'Operational Information'

Eckhart described the Carrier IQ as a rootkit, and said it cannot easily be removed without reinstalling the operating system.

Carrier IQ, he said, listens on the phones for commands "contained in 'tasking profiles' sent a number of ways and returns whatever 'metric' was asked for." In the video, Eckhart shows keystrokes being made on the demonstrated smartphone, and immediately appearing on another screen, which represents the information being sent by Carrier IQ. The transmissions are also reported to include information about installed apps and battery life.

After he described the software as a rootkit, the Mountain View, Calif.-based Carrier IQ sent him a cease-and-desist letter. The Electronic Frontier Foundation quickly took up his cause, and Carrier IQ has since withdrawn its legal threat.

In a Media Alert posted on its Web site, Carrier IQ said that its software delivers mobile intelligence "on the performance of mobile devices and networks to assist operators and device manufacturer in delivering high-quality products and services to their customers."

The software, the company said, counts and measures "operational information" in mobile devices, which is used to "improve the quality of the network, understand device issues and ultimately improve the user experience." It noted that the software is embedded by device manufacturers, along with other diagnostics, before shipping.

140 Million Devices

Carrier IQ insisted that it is "counting and summarizing performance, not recording keystrokes or providing tracking tools." It added that no personal subscriber information is sold by Carrier IQ to third parties, and that all information is encrypted and secured in the carrier's network and in its "audited and customer-approved facilities."

The software comes pre-installed on 140 million devices made by Samsung, HTC, Nokia and Research In Motion. There are also reports that references to Carrier IQ have been found in Apple's iOS 5, but there is not yet evidence that the software is installed or that it records keystrokes as on devices from other manufacturers.

John Pescatore, an analyst with industry research firm Gartner, noted that, if keystrokes are being sent without a user's permission, "it's a huge issue." He added that it's important to know more details, especially since performance-measurement can mean different things.

Pescatore suggested that Carrier IQ's software might offer "a legitimate kind of function, but they may not have adequately considered privacy issues."

ICC requests arrest warrant for Sudan defense minister (Reuters)

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) ? The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor has requested an arrest warrant for Sudan's defense minister Abdelrahim Mohamed Hussein for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Darfur from August 2003 to March 2004.

The Hague-based ICC, the world's top war crimes court, has already issued arrest warrants for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir on charges of orchestrating genocide in Sudan's Darfur region.

RolePlayGateway?

August 9th, 2589 A.D. Terran Standard calendar. Fifteen thirty hours, local time.

Hungry, poor wretches of humanity starred out of dark alleyways, doors, windows and openly on the streets, at the bright lights and tall temporary buildings, which had sprung up among them. It was a strange sight, to see such wondrous things appear inside the gloomy, massive hive tower. They had set up inside of the only public square on tier two hundred eleven, which cut up into two tiers above it. For three days now, they had been setting up, shuttles arrive from the top of the hive, by way of a massive fright elevator, which was located on the edge of the public square. Everyone could remember when heavily armed troops from House Brakus, House Carmilia and House Damus had arrived, just before the strangers had, clearing the square with armored fists and then laying down a layer of clean ground slag from the factories below, covering over of slimy filth of the place.

It was the first time, since the hive had been raised, that all three of the ruling houses had worked together to get something done. Of course, it was no more then a slight effort to keep the populace from rioting. Recently, the factories had been ordered to double production, in order to complete with the other three hives on the continent. However, the increase in production was also leading towards an increase in fatalities. With workers dropping like flies, the common people were getting edgy, convinced that the high lords and ladies, just wanted to work them to death. Something needed to be done, without lowering the quotas or profits. Bring in one of the largest and well known interplanetary circuses, was an easy choice to make.

Cooper stood in front of the big top, his right leg twitching now and then, as he uneasily looked beyond the colorful energy barriers, bright with advertisements for his different performers and jarring against the dimness of the tier. Not for the tenth time today, he wondered if he had made the right choice in bringing his people to this planet. After the falling out with the royal family of Corsivin, had he been in the right frame of mind, when he went looking for their next job? Had he made a mistake because he wasn't thinking straight, bring those he held as close as blood kin, into a place he wouldn't feel comfortable in with a company of special forces troops? Such thoughts churned behind the calm pools of his liquid silver eyes.

In truth, the ringmaster was right to worry. Among the staring eyes of the volatile population, were the sharp stares of hive gangers. Tattooed and covered with piercings, men and women from the three main gangs watch the circus with hungry smiles. There was money to be made here. Things and beasts could be stolen from the outsiders. There were strong workers among them, who could be sold to the factories or shuttled off in the other main export from Roisdor, indentured persons, perfect for seeding new colonies or as cheep labor. Then there were the circus folk talented enough to be sold to the high lords, as personal entertainers or those who could be thrown into the sex trade.

The circus owner stared at the rows and rows of cages. One side on each cage was made from an energy barrier, much like what was lining the field but it was clear, allowing visitors to peer inside at the many strange and wonderful animals. It also allowed the animals to stare back at you. Many of them would make multiple attacks on the barriers in the weeks to come, as the masses shuffled past, taunting the beasts with their freedom. Then came the ranks of vender stands. Some travel with the circus, plying the crowds with exotic food or games of chance and skill.

Beyond the cages and venders, stood the main attraction. A trio of brightly stripped tents, the largest in the middle and flanked on either side by lesser tents. In there would the human and alien performers of the circus amaze the crowd or reduce them to fits of laughter. Once the night fell, the tents would be divided, as the freaks came out to play and the more exotic or erotic entertainers would take over. A wonderland for those who kept to the oldest forms of showmanship.

Behind the main attraction were tents belonging to the performers, roustabouts, lighting crews, cooks and the venders. There was also a kitchen and mess tent, ready to feed the battalion and keep them going. There were also storage units, for props and dividers. Corrals and cages for the beasts in the animal acts, which were connected to tubs leading into the main tents, stood in patient rows.

A reminder flashed across Cooper's eyes as the grinding and squealing of the fright elevator doors opening filled the air. The first wave of his performers was arriving on sight. As soon as they were settled into the tents (which were in fact small prefabbed plysteel huts, which could be set up in minutes), they would have to get ready for the opening night. He wanted the three weeks of performances to be over and done with quick.
