YouTube hits 4 billion views per day, deals with 60 hours of uploaded content every minute (Update: Count it in nyans)

It looks like that redesign was worth it. The Google-owned video site has recently revealed that it's now streaming 4 billion videos every day, up 25 percent on daily views from eight months earlier. According to Reuter's report, the site now has to deal with around 60 hours of uploaded video every minute. As long as those education videos are kept separate and the cat content keeps coming, we'll be happy.

Update: Check out the official stats on Google's YouTube blog post, in the video embedded after the break, or a site chock-full of relevant visualizations the company has put together at OneHourPerSecond.com

Two more arrested in Europe over Megaupload case (Reuters)

AUCKLAND (Reuters) ? Two men sought worldwide in connection with a U.S.-led crackdown on the online file-sharing website Megaupload have been arrested, a New Zealand government lawyer told a court on Monday.

U.S. authorities had issued international warrants for Sven Echternach, 39, a German, and Andrus Nomm, 32, of Estonia for their involvement in alleged internet piracy and money laundering.

The two had been arrested in Europe, New Zealand government lawyer Anne Toohey told a court hearing on an application for bail by Megaupload's founder Kim Dotcom, also known as Kim Schmitz.

Toohey said Echternach had travelled to Germany from the Philippines, but cannot be extradited because German law does not permit extradition of its own citizens. Nomm had been detained in the Netherlands.

A Slovakian national, Julius Bencko, is still being sought in connection with what U.S. authorities have called the Mega Conspiracy.

Dotcom, 38, and three others, were arrested in New Zealand on Friday after police raided a country estate at the request of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Raids took place in several other countries and the Megaupload site has been shut down, with the business's assets frozen.

On Monday, Dotcom's New Zealand lawyer denied Megaupload was involved in copyright breaches, the pirating of movies and music, and said his client should be given bail, possibly involving electronic tagging.

Toohey said Dotcom was an "extreme flight risk" and should be held in custody ahead of formal hearing on the United States' extradition bid.

U.S. authorities want to extradite Dotcom on charges he masterminded a scheme that made more than $175 million in a few short years by copying and distributing music, movies and other copyrighted content without authorisation. Megaupload's lawyer has said the company simply offered online storage.

Latest Apple patent lawsuit targets Galaxy Nexus lockscreen

Android Central

The latest installment of Apple vs. Samsung saga sees Cupertino taking offense with the lockscreen on the Galaxy Nexus. The complaint, filed once again in Germany, is the first directed towards the Android 4.0 flagship device. The claim made is that the Galaxy Nexus infringes upon Apple's own slide-to-unlock utility model.

FOSS Patent's blogger Florian Mueller describes this utility model as a limited fast-track patent that companies are allowed to file for alongside traditional patents. Apple has done just this with slide-to-unlock in Germany. Samsung's defense points to a device from Sweden known as the Neonode, which managed to persuade a court in the Netherlands in 2011 to question the validity of the Apple's slide-to-unlock filing.

The court is expected to reveal its decision on Mar. 16. What's clear already, though, is that we're sure to see more of these patent lawsuits as the year continues.

'Blind' Quantum Computing Proposed For the Cloud

Quantum computing is just a rather basic branch of computer science which seems to be winning all the hype in the world at the moment because there's not much sexy in terms of hard non-biological research with a practical slant.

I'm not quite sure how the output remains unknown to the computer. I know most cloud services either haven't or won't last long enough to give you all the output you were expecting to get for free/absurdly low cost, but I'd be very impressed with a computing system which is able to deliver you something without knowing it's delivered it.

Of course, there are various computations which can be performed partly by a separate processor without the initial input and final output being known by that separate processor, but there's nothing quantum-y about that.

At NY civil trial, Mets hope to shed Madoff taint (AP)

NEW YORK ? With spring training just weeks away, nobody's working harder to prepare for the New York Mets' future than their lawyers.

A March trial may decide how much the team owners' disastrous investment in the fraudulent business of imprisoned financier Bernard Madoff will cost the club.

"It's going to garner tons of attention and comes at a horrible time for the Mets. It's not a great way to start the season," said Neal H. Levin, who heads the fraud team at the Chicago law firm Freeborn & Peters and is not involved in the case.

A court-appointed trustee is trying to recover money for investors in the massive Ponzi scheme in which 4,900 investors were told their $20 billion investment had grown to $68 billion by November 2008. But when investigators finally reached him, only a few hundred million dollars actually remained in Madoff's accounts. Madoff admitted the fraud and is serving a 150-year sentence.

To the trustee, Irving Picard, the Mets owners were winners in Madoff's multi-decade fiasco, pocketing hundreds of millions of dollars in fictitious profits.

Picard has demanded more than $1 billion for investors, saying Mets co-owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz either knew or should have known Madoff was up to no good. The two men have steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, saying they were victims themselves.

After the lawsuit was filed, the Mets announced they were considering selling up to 25 percent of the franchise because of "uncertainty" caused by the lawsuit. Now, the need for such a sizable infusion of cash might be diminishing. The Mets have shrunk their payroll and the legal prospects seem to have improved, as two decisions by the presiding judge may have limited the chances that Madoff's downfall will doom the team's finances.

In the first, U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff limited what the team's owners might have to pay to other Madoff investors to $386 million. He also made it possible the payout won't top more than $83.3 million, saying that the potential penalty would be limited to that amount unless Picard can prove at the trial that the Mets owners "willfully blinded" themselves to Madoff's fraud.

In a second ruling Tuesday, Rakoff blocked Picard from appealing the earlier ruling until after the trial, despite claims that the judge's reasoning will affect the calculation for the entire recovery effort, possibly costing jilted Madoff investors billions of dollars.

The Mets declined to comment Friday about the coming trial. A spokeswoman for Picard said his lawyers also would not comment because the litigation was ongoing.

This week, lawyers will submit written arguments to Rakoff on their pretrial requests. Rulings will define the perimeters of the trial, set to start March 19, and perhaps clear the way for former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo to step to the plate in his role as mediator to try to broker a settlement.

The likelihood of a deal seemed to diminish, though, when Picard and his lawyers concluded that Rakoff's reasoning might be applied to other cases, costing billions of dollars for investors.

So far, about $325 million has been distributed to the holders of 1,230 investor accounts, in addition to $798 million disbursed as a result of an industry fund that reimburses victims of fraud up to $500,000. Agreements so far resulted in the recovery of about $8.6 billion and the recoveries exceed prior restitution efforts related to Ponzi schemes in both dollar value and percentage of stolen funds recovered, Picard's office reported. Legal appeals were delaying disbursement of the rest of the money to investors.

Levin said there is a trend in courts that could work against the Mets, with the legal term "willful blindness" being loosely defined as having a level of knowledge that exists somewhere between actual knowledge and something that should have been known.

"As a baseball fan, I'm disappointed that one of baseball's prize franchises is under such a cloud," said Robert Berliner, an attorney who runs the Berliner Group mediation service in Chicago and is not involved in the case. "The Wilpons dealt with their childhood friend and he turned out to be a crook. It's hard for me to see that that makes them accessories."

He said it was too early to rule out a settlement.

"After the narrowing of the issues by the judge, I thought they ought to be in a position to settle it. I was a little surprised that it hasn't happened yet," he added. "There are a lot of cases that settle on the courthouse steps on the day of trial and this could be one of them."

Wesseling: Flacco's litmus test awaits Sunday

Ravens QB is better than people give him credit for, but he must crack a barrier Sunday

Image: Joe FlaccoAP

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco celebrates his touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin during their victory over the Texans last Sunday.

By Chris Wesseling

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 2:04 p.m. ET Jan. 19, 2012

Entering Sunday's NFL conference championship games, no player is under more scrutiny than Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco.

For over a decade, the working narrative has been this: the Ravens? ground attack and swarming defense compensate for an anemic passing game.

"I'm sure if we win [the Super Bowl], I'll have nothing to do with why we won, according to you guys," Flacco told the media last week. Since then, the Ravens ? thanks to four turnovers ? squeaked past a Texans team that posted more first downs, total yards, and yards per pass play than Baltimore.

Former AP defensive player of the year Ed Reed, among others, fingered Flacco as the primary culprit, taking aim at his shaky pocket presence and loss of composure in managing just three points over the final 45 minutes.

But does Flacco deserve his status as the public?s playoff punching bag?

Team leader Ray Lewis, who said from "Day 1" that Flacco?s arm was special, defends his quarterback as a ?flat-out winner.? And the numbers back that up. For his career, Flacco is 5-3 in the playoffs during and 44-20 in the regular season, including a 7-0 record against playoff teams this season.

No quarterback has more regular-season victories in his first four seasons.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, Flacco has shown the ability to move the ball through the air with the best of the league?s passers. He entered the season as one of just six quarterbacks in NFL history with 10,000 yards in his first three seasons. Flacco is the only quarterback since the NFL merger in 1970 to start a playoff game in each of his first four seasons. Through nine games this season, he was on pace for the sixth most passing attempts in history.

That success, though, masks a disturbing habit of following standout performances with disappointing losses against inferior teams. Flacco?s inconsistency forced the Ravens to alter their blueprint down the stretch, winning six of seven games while leaning on Ray Rice and a typically stingy defense.

Even against a Patriots defense that surrendered the most completions of 20-plus yards and the second-most passing yards in history, Baltimore?s first priority will be to jumpstart a running game that averaged just 2.8 yards per rush last week.

?Time of possession is going to be huge? at New England, coach John Harbaugh said, essentially giving away his game plan. It?s no secret the Ravens offense is best when Rice and Ricky Williams set up Flacco?s down-field strikes to Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin.

As great as the Reed- and Lewis-led defense has been, Tom Brady?s surgically precise offense won?t implode the closer it advances toward the red zone as overwhelmed rookie T.J. Yates did a week ago.

It?s going to take more than 20 points for Flacco to finally ascend that AFC summit of Brady-Manning-Roethlisberger and reach Super Bowl XLVI.

If the Baltimore faithful have any hope of parading in the streets of the city that welcomed the Mayflower moving vans of their beloved Colts in 1984, Flacco is going to have to go against script to outgun Brady by taking advantage of that porous Pats secondary. This is his litmus test. In fact, one national report suggests Flacco?s future in Baltimore may hinge on his ability to finally knock off one of the NFL?s elite quarterbacks in the postseason.

Young cancer patient Perez's ultimate warrior (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? When Eloy Perez fights holder Adrien Broner for the WBO super featherweight title next month in St. Louis, he will have in his corner an inspirational nine-year-old boy whom he regards as the ultimate warrior.

Sy Sherman, the boxer's official belt carrier, was diagnosed with primary liver cancer 11 months ago but he has been a source of optimism ever since he joined the Perez team last year.

"Sy lifts up our spirits and he's fun to have around," Mexican-American Perez told Reuters. "He just smiles like nothing bothers him, even when he is hurting. He's more a fighter than I am. I am the softy.

"He's coming to St. Louis with us to watch us win that title and he's going to be the one holding that belt afterwards. He deserves it. He's just nine years old and he's already been through 11 rounds of (chemotherapy).

"He has spirit and a big heart, a heart of steel. I can't wait for that moment when I win in St. Louis and he will get on my shoulders and hold that belt high so we can all be proud."

Perez, who has a professional career record of 23-0-2 with seven knockouts, was introduced to Sherman by his assistant trainer, Sam Garcia, at their training base in Salinas, California.

"Sam heard about Sy's story and I know financially it's very hard for any parent to go through something like this," Perez said. "So Sam found him and brought him on to our team.

"We wanted to help him out and so I met him and we all fell in love with him. Sy keeps smiling and, since I met him, he has come to my training sessions and to the last couple of fights. It's great having him around."

Sherman, who lives with his family in Salinas, was aged eight when he learned he had hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide, accounting to the Mayo Clinic.

The most common form of primary liver cancer, HCC usually affects people age 50 or older and if the cancer cannot be completely removed, the disease is usually fatal within three to six months.

Since his diagnosis, Sherman has undergone 11 rounds of chemotherapy and is now taking Nexavar pills, which are typically given to liver cancer patients who cannot be treated with surgery.

'DANGER ZONE'

"Unfortunately we were not able to continue the chemotherapy," said Sherman's father Matt. "He was already in the danger zone with the amount of toxins in his body.

"Remarkably, though, the cancer seems to be slowly but surely going away. It's a miracle. He shouldn't be here today is what it came down to and here he is, stronger than ever."

In Matt's eyes, Sy's regular visits to the Salinas gym where he chats to Perez, the boxer's trainer Max Garcia, assistant trainer Sam Garcia and manager Kathy Garcia have been a significant factor in his son's improving health.

"It has given him something to look forward to and has kept his mind off of his cancer," Matt said. "It's kind of like a mind-over-matter feeling for him.

"He doesn't think about cancer, he is just thinking about Eloy, the Garcias and the next trip he gets to go on with the team. He talks and talks non-stop, and they spoil him every day with little presents and stuff.

"I've got to thank the whole Garcia boxing camp for just brightening Sy's day more than anyone could have done up to this point. They are all like family now."

With Sy in his corner, Perez is confident he will take the WBO super featherweight title from the unbeaten Boner (22-0, 18 KOs) on February 25.

"My training is going according to plan and I have been sparring with some incredible partners, all very talented and none of them have cut me any slack," the 25-year-old said.

"I can't wait for February 25th, I will own the night. I've worked so hard for many years for this opportunity and now it's just six weeks' away. I have my eyes on the prize, I'm not going all the way to St. Louis to lose. It's not an option."

London Markets: FTSE 100 gains as resources, banks rise

By Sara Sjolin

LONDON (MarketWatch) ? British stocks rose on Tuesday as gains for the mining and banking sectors lifted the market after trade data from China suggested continued solid Chinese demand.

The FTSE 100 /quotes/zigman/3173262 UK:UKX +1.50% , Britain?s benchmark stock index, climbed 1.5% to 5,697, reversing a 0.7% loss on Monday.

Euro crisis close to boiling point again

The prospect of the European debt crisis boiling over is rearing its head again as Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Nicolas Sarkozy are holding meetings - and once again they are pointing fingers at Greece.

Mining shares posted strong gains, with Kazakhmys PLC /quotes/zigman/391399 UK:KAZ +5.03% ?jumping 5.1%, Antofagasta PLC /quotes/zigman/139152 UK:ANTO +5.02% ?rising 5.1%, and Vedanta Resources PLC /quotes/zigman/336962 UK:VED +6.05% ?climbing 6.2%.

Mining stocks tend to rise on positive data from China, because the nation is a big consumer of commodities. Detailed imports data showed Tuesday that Chinese demand growth for many commodities has picked up, according to Barclays Capital. Copper imports rose 47.7% year-on-year in December compared to 28.6% in November, while aluminum imports increased 25.1% versus 3.1% in November.

?There is a growing acceptance that China might be able to do a soft landing rather than a hard landing, as previously feared,? said Richard Hunter, head of U.K. equities at Hargreaves Lansdown PLC.

Gold futures also gained Tuesday, which further lent support to the mining sector.

Financials and banks also pushed the British stock market north with Lloyds Banking Group PLC /quotes/zigman/255656/quotes/nls/lyg LYG -3.07% ? /quotes/zigman/126322 UK:LLOY +3.78% ?rising 3.8%, Barclays PLC /quotes/zigman/152323/quotes/nls/bcs BCS -2.53% ? /quotes/zigman/301787 UK:BARC +5.73% ?climbing 6% and Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC /quotes/zigman/530544/quotes/nls/rbs RBS -0.64% ? /quotes/zigman/155978 UK:RBS +4.91% ?moving up 4.5%.

?The banks benefit from an improved global economy and more promising signals from U.S. economic data,? said Hunter.

However, bank stocks are more volatile than the broader market and tend to post strong gains in market rallies, but big losses when sentiment is negative, according to Hunter. Tuesday?s gains in the banking sector are therefore unlikely to continue and can quickly be converted into losses.

?Overall, the European situation has to be resolved, before we can make sustainable progress. I will not be surprised if we see these gains being reversed,? Hunter said.

In the energy sector, Cairn Energy PLC /quotes/zigman/576745 UK:CNE +3.09% ?posted a 3% gain, after the company said it will pay shareholders $3.5 billion in cash. Shareholders will receive ?1.60 ($2.47) for each existing ordinary share.

Retailer Marks & Spencer Group PLC /quotes/zigman/298234 UK:MKS +3.05% ?rose 3% on positive Christmas sales data. Group sales were up 2.4% excluding valued-added tax for the 13 weeks leading up to Dec. 31, with food and clothing performing the strongest. The retailer also reiterated its full-year profit view, but said it expects conditions to remain challenging.

Soul Electronics' intros Party in a Box wireless speaker system, Ludacris' new way to keep your festivities bumping

Can we get a "hey-oh" from all the party people in the CES-house? Soul Electronics (rapper Ludacris' line of audio products) has today unveiled its first non-headphone device, dubbed Party in a Box. The name may seem a bit silly, but this speaker system is packing some serious specs. The PIAB is large enough to dock an iPad, and features both AirPlay and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. On top of ensuring nearly any modern mobile device should be able to stream audio to it sans wires, the mini-rig also comes with 5.8GHz two-way transceiver that'll allow you to play your tunes over multiple PIABs, or even other speakers. Speaking of speakers, internally you'll find a duo of 6.5-inch woofers, to 3-inch mid-purposed drivers, and finally, a quartet of 1-inch tweeters.

For wired connectivity, the rig packs an HDMI output, an auxiliary connection for wired hookup, and a best of all, a balanced mic input (XLR?) so you can MC from just about anywhere there's power. Considering that Party in a Box features a carry handle, shoulder strap and will plug plug into wall and car sockets or run off of its own rechargeable batteries, we'd imagine it's a very feasible proposition. For a bit of extra spice, the system also has a a pair of VU meters that'll bump to your jams, and even customizable mood-lighting.

Aside from PIAB, Soul is also introducing a few new color-schemes for its SL49, SL99 in-ear headphones, as well as its SL300 over-ear model. There's no specific word on pricing or availability just yet, but if we hear anything from the show floor, you can be sure we'll keep you post. Full press release just past the break.
