Rick Santorum to Earn Over Half of Kansas Caucus Votes

Polls have closed in Kansas and caucus goers have spoken. USA Today projected the winner of the Kansas caucus is Rick Santorum with more than 51 percent approval from attendees.

* Santorum and Rep. Ron Paul were the only candidates who campaigned in the state, according to the New York Times. Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich chose to focus on other states such as Alabama and Mississippi.

* Kansas has 40 delegates; Santorum was projected to win 30 of them. Even with the victory, New York Times estimates show Romney with 441 delegates to Santorum's 213. A candidate needs 1,144 delegates to win the nomination and there are 1,477 delegates still available.

* Romney won caucus races in the South Pacific islands of Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands, which earned him nine delegates each, according to Fox News. Santorum still has less than half of Romney's delegates because of the wins in the island chains.

* KCTV stated Santorum billed himself as a conservative alternative to Romney in Kansas, a deeply conservative and blue-collar farming state. The strategy worked as Santorum earned his biggest victory in terms of percentage of support. Santorum's next-biggest victory was in Minnesota with 44.9 percent.

* More than 1,000 people attended a caucus event in Wichita as Santorum's wife, Karen, spoke to the crowd. She bet on telling voters that her husband will help return manufacturing jobs to the area by lowering taxes.

* With 97 percent of sites reporting, Santorum had 15,000 votes to Romney's 6,200. Gingrich was a distant third with just less than 4,200 votes. Paul earned around 13 percent of the vote with 3,700 tallies. Paul has yet to win any contests among nearly half of the states that have had contests so far.

* There are 27 states left to vote.

* Romney needs 703 more delegates to secure the nomination. Santorum has to earn 931 more slots to win.
